He said, ‘When I am saying player, I do not mean the player of any one team but the players of all the teams who had to play there.’ Gavaskar also sympathized with the administrators as they face flak from sports fans who are unable to watch exciting cricket between their favorite teams due to inclement weather.
“It is easy to point fingers at administrators and they can be easily made scapegoats. So it is really important to find out why the matches were not held in Hambantota knowing the weather forecast for Colombo. Though he is not against players having their opinion about the schedule of matches, he wants them to adjust to it when there are some unforeseen circumstances like inclement weather.
Rain could also play spoilsport in the India-Pakistan match on September 10, which is the second match between the two teams after the first match was abandoned due to rain. Gavaskar said, ‘Of course you want the player to be in good mental condition. Gym facilities, practice facilities should be good but sometimes in such conditions we have to understand the important thing and in Hambantota there was very less chance of rain whereas heavy rain is forecast in Colombo.
He said, ‘And when I say experiment, this is an opportunity to prepare for the World Cup. But I am not saying that the Asia Cup is a less important tournament. We need to win this tournament.
