Super Over Drama: Was Rohit retired hurt or retired out?

Bengaluru. The drama of the third and final T20 match played between India and Afghanistan is still not stopping. To reach the result of the match, two super overs had to be resorted to, but in the midst of these super overs, a question arose which still remains.

Did Rohit Sharma retire out or retire hurt during the first super over? In fact, during the first super over, it was thought that Rohit retired and left the field. If we look at the ICC playing conditions, it is clearly mentioned there that if a batsman is out in the first Super Over, he cannot bat in the next Super Over.

However, the officials related to the match have not presented any clear picture regarding this incident. But if Rohit retired hurt, then only he could come to bat again. Rohit hit two consecutive sixes on the third and fourth balls in the first super over, after which he went to the other end with a single. Now India had to score two runs on the last ball to win and the strike was with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

However, then India made a change at the non-striker end and Rinku Singh was sent there in place of Rohit. If Rohit had retired out, then such a decision would have been taken with the intention that the Indian team would have a quick runner available to run the last ball.

The ball took the edge of Jaiswal’s bat and only one run could be scored. After which India had to prepare to play the second super over. However, this time Rohit himself came on the field with Rinku. Team India, which had chased in the first Super Over, now had to bat first. Rohit hit a six on the first ball and a four on the second. He could score only one run on the third ball. However, Rinku’s wicket fell on the very next ball and Rohit was also run out. But Ravi Bishnoi took both the wickets in his first two balls.

After listening to the words of Indian team head coach Rahul Dravid while talking to the broadcasters after the match, it seemed as if he was accepting that Rohit had retired himself. Not only this, Dravid also compared this incident to Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement in IPL 2022. Dravid said, “Getting himself out was Ashwin level thinking.”

Afghanistan team’s head coach Jonathan Trott was also asked about the incident involving Rohit during the post-match press conference, whether the officials related to the match had shared with him the information whether Rohit was retired out or retired hurt?

Trott said, “I have no idea. Have there been two Super Overs before? That’s what I want to say. This is kind of new. New kinds of rules keep being made. All I want to say is that we “Keep testing the rules and guidelines.” Trott was perhaps trying to convey that a little more clarity was needed in the communication between the officials and the team related to the match. However, he took more issue with Afghanistan’s bowling choice for the second Super Over than Rohit’s incident.

Actually, Afghanistan wanted Azmatullah Omarzai, who bowled the first Super Over, to bowl the second Super Over as well. However, according to the ICC playing conditions, a bowler who has bowled in the previous Super Over cannot bowl in the next Super Over.

Trott said, “We were not told about it. We wanted Azmat to bowl the second super over also. Farid bowled well. But there is still need for more clarity on these things. Since this has happened, then obviously These will be explained. If these are the rules, then it is good. I think we played a good match and all these things should not be a point of discussion.”
