Suryakumar, the world’s number one T20 batsman and a key member of Mumbai Indians in the IPL, found it difficult to strengthen India in ODIs in preparation for the World Cup. He failed to score a single fifty in 20 matches between February 2022 and August 2023. In his last assignment in South Africa, Suryakumar was pushed to No.6.

The right-handed batsman is part of the 18-member squad for the Asia Cup and looks set to make it to the World Cup squad as well. But he knows that he will have to turn the tide in his favour. Surya told Star Sports, ‘I think whatever role will be given to me, I will try to maintain that role and if it is a changed role then I will try to do it. But yes, it is a format in which I am really looking forward to do well.

Surya said, ‘Everyone is saying that T20 is going well for me, both are white-ball cricket but why am I not able to crack the code in 50-over format. But, I am doing my practice because according to me, this format is the most challenging. Suryakumar elaborated on his vision for ODI cricket as a mix of all three formats.

He said, ‘The reason behind this is that here you have to play like the other three formats. First working with calmness and composure, then rotating the strike well, then finally doing T20 gameplay. India skipper Rohit Sharma had said a few days ago that Suryakumar is seeking help from players who have excelled across formats and the batsman gave more details.

Surya said, ‘Balance is very important in this format, and for this reason, I have been practicing a lot and also talking to Rahul (Dravid) sir, Rohit bhai and Virat (Kohli) bhai in this regard. Hopefully, as this tournament progresses, I will crack the code.

He said, ‘I am just trying to maintain my intention and attitude, not least because it is very important to maintain your attitude when you are playing this game. But I am trying to play with the situation. For someone who jumps in when a wicket falls, Suryakumar said he is always in his ‘top gear’.

Surya said, ‘I am always in top gear. I always feel excited when I am in the dugout because I eagerly wait for the time when I go out to bat. Also, even if I get out on the first ball, I have no problem as my preparation and enthusiasm inside the dugout remains the same.

He said, ‘Every time the wicket falls, my heart rate increases, so I always run to the crease because I feel good when my heart rate is high.’ India will face arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup on September 2. This match is expected to be exciting.
