New Delhi. Mumbai Indians proved to be a challenging hiccup in Gujarat Titans’ attempt to regain the top spot in the 2023 IPL standings, where Mumbai beat Titans by 27 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday evening.

It was a sky show as Suryakumar Yadav put on a brilliant performance with the bat, smashing 103 off 49 balls with 11 fours and six sixes to take Mumbai to a mammoth total of 218.

Gujarat’s top-order collapse saw the run-chase slip out of their hands, even Rashid Khan’s late 79 (32 balls, 3 fours, 10 sixes) was not enough to give Gujarat the win. The win keeps Mumbai third in the standings, bringing them closer to completing their season turnaround and securing a playoff spot, while Gujarat maintain a one-point lead over Chennai at the top of the table despite this defeat.

Yadav stole all the limelight with his sensational knock, which brought up his maiden century in IPL. His impact propelled Mumbai Indians to their fourth win in five matches, leading to praise from GeoCinema’s IPL expert Zaheer Khan.

“The Sun we know is back and getting better and better, especially at a crucial time. This time is going to be the most important for any team in the tournament as you approach the business end of the tournament. Going into the playoffs and putting our best foot forward. When you have Surya, anything can happen. Teams will be watching the MI line-up carefully.”

Fondly called ‘Sky’, the batsman colored the Mumbai skyline with sixes over the Wankhede Stadium.

Suresh Raina was impressed with Yadav’s measured approach to batting on the night, “He plays with the psychology of the bowler. The way he hit the ball around the ground. Today, he batted with calmness once again.” He had good approach. He had good intent, and look at the result. He hit the ball all around the ground for 103 off 49 balls and he finished it off with his six.”

The Titans had a slim chance of pulling off this win after their top-order collapse, but a flurry of late sixes from Rashid Khan gave the fans some last-minute entertainment.

Khan praised the exceptional bowler for his fine performance with the bat.

“It was an outstanding innings by Rashid Khan. It could have been a big win but Rashid Khan was in the way. For me, the best innings a lower middle-order batsman has played in an IPL innings in a very long time. That kind of six.” We’ve seen that was phenomenal.”
