Basel. India’s singles campaign at the Swiss Open 2023 has suffered a major setback with the exit of two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, former men’s world number one Kidambi Srikanth and other top singles player HS Prannoy in the last 16. Mithun Manjunath also crashed out at the pre-quarterfinal stage. Men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and second seed Chirag Shetty are still in the fray.
Sindhu went down to defending champion, Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia 21-15, 12-21, 21-18 in a hard-fought round of 16 match. Sindhu, who had beaten Switzerland’s Janjira Stadelmann in the opening round, was ousted after a 59-minute loss at the St. Jakobshalle on Thursday.
World No. 9 and fifth seed HS Prannoy went down 21-8, 21-8 to unseeded Christo Popov of France. Prannoy had beaten All England Open finalist Shi Yu Qi of China to reach the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals before losing on Thursday.
