Badminton sources told The Times of India that the organizers had made it clear that headscarves were mandatory for women medal winners, although there was no mention of a podium dress code in the tournament’s prospectus. He told- The Badminton World Federation’s competition rules in the prospectus talk about clothing rules, which are common in tournaments around the world. While we knew that headscarves were mandatory when women were out in Tehran, there was no specific mention about their use during the tournament.
Female shuttlers did not face such restrictions (leggings or headscarf) during their matches but no male spectators were allowed to watch them play. A sticker at the entry gate, which read ‘No males allowed’, did not discriminate between a female player’s coach or her parents. Both were barred from entering the stadium as they were men. Interestingly, the tournament included mixed doubles (i.e. pairs of girls and boys play together), reportedly for the first time and was attended by 10 pairs from around the world.
Sources told that the women’s program was in the morning and men’s in the afternoon. Only female spectators were allowed to watch the women’s matches. Also, all match officials in women’s matches were women. The male parents who accompanied their daughters to the meet did not get to watch a single match. Only during mixed doubles were male and female players seen together on the court.
