Tata Motors Domestic Auto Sales: India’s leading automobile manufacturer Tata Motors has released the vehicle sales figures for December 2023. The automaker has recorded a growth of about 4 per cent with total vehicle sales of 76,138 units in December 2023, while the passenger vehicle segment has registered a growth of about 8 per cent with sales of 43,470 units. The special thing is that Tata Motors has had record sales of hatchback and SUV cars during the month of December 2023, which helped in its total vehicle sales.
4 percent increase in vehicle sales in domestic market
According to media reports, the total sales of domestic vehicle manufacturer Tata Motors in the domestic market increased by four percent to 76,138 units in December 2023. In the same month a year ago, the company had sold 72,997 vehicles in the domestic market. In a statement issued by the company, it has been said that its total sales of passenger vehicles (PV), including electric vehicles, in the domestic market were 43,470 units last month, which is more than nine percent from the figure of 40,043 units for December 2022. Last month, the company sold a total of 5,006 electric passenger vehicles, which is 29 percent more than the figure of 3,868 units in December 2022.
Record sales for the third consecutive year
Calendar year 2023 was the third consecutive year for Tata Motors to register record sales figures. During the year 2023, the company sold a total of 5.53 lakh vehicles. Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, said that the company has recorded record sales in 2023 due to the performance of the compact SUV and hatchback segments. However, the hatchback segment in the auto industry is declining. Tata Motors said its total commercial vehicles (CV) sales in December 2023 increased by one per cent to 34,180 units as compared to 33,949 units in the same period a year ago.
8 percent jump in passenger vehicle sales
Tata Motors recorded 43,675 passenger vehicles in December 2023, which is more than eight percent compared to December 2022. The company sold 40,407 cars in the domestic market and overseas markets. The domestic automobile giant also claimed that electric cars and CNG-powered vehicles have played an important role in the growth path of the brand.
Record sales of vehicles in October-December
Tata Motors said that 1,38,455 cars were sold in the third quarter of this financial year between October and December 2023. This is an increase of five percent compared to 1,32,255 units sold during the same period of the last financial year. Tata Motors claims that it sold 43,470 units in India in December 2023, which is nine percent more than the 40,043 units sold in the same month a year ago. The carmaker sold 1,37,875 units of passenger vehicles in the domestic market last quarter, which is five percent more than the same quarter last fiscal, when it sold 131,297 units.
EV cars lead in sales
Tata Motors has been a leader in the Indian electric car market with models like Nexon EV, Tiago EV and Tigor EV. The domestic carmaker leads the Indian electric passenger vehicle segment with around 80 percent market share. The automaker sold 5,006 electric cars in India and overseas markets in December 2023, up 29 percent from 3,868 units sold in the same month a year ago. On the other hand, 15,232 electric cars were sold in both domestic and overseas markets last quarter, which is 21 percent more than 12,596 units recorded in the same quarter a year ago.
