Rohit Sharma and Gill’s flop show
Rohit Sharma, Captain (4/10, bad): Rohit’s performance as captain in the WTC final was the worst. From the decision to bowl first after winning the toss to dropping Ravichandran Ashwin, he was criticized a lot. After scoring 15 runs in the first innings, Rohit was lbw to Pat Cummins. In the second innings, he tried to bat carefully and took his score to 43 but he was again lbw in an attempt to sweep the ball of Nathan Lyon. He got 4 out of 10 marks.
Shubman Gill (3/10, bad): Team India had high hopes from the young batsman Gill. But Gill’s poor shot selection kept him away from big scores in both the innings. However, after he was dismissed for 14 runs in the second innings, a debate broke out on the umpire’s decision. He also contributed only 13 runs in the first innings. This batsman has won the Orange Cap of IPL 2023 by scoring more than 800 runs. It is expected that in the coming years also the team management will show faith in him.
Pujara and Kohli failed
Cheteshwar Pujara (2/10, very poor): Despite having no IPL fatigue and having an excellent county season, Pujara could not perform well in the WTC final. In the first innings, Pujara was bowled by Cameron Green after scoring 14 runs. He did not appear in rhythm even once. At the same time, Pujara reached a score of 27 in the second innings but Pat Cummins sent him out. Now the days ahead can be difficult for Pujara and he can also be discharged from the team.
Virat Kohli (4/10, bad): Virat Kohli, who returned to form after almost two years, rocked the bat in the IPL. But Kohli was dismissed after scoring 14 and 49 in the WTC final. Sunil Gavaskar, Sanjay Manjrekar and a few others made it abundantly clear that Kohli would have been in a better position in the first innings if he had not advanced to Mitchell Starc’s delivery. Getting ahead regardless of the length of the ball has been a problem for Kohli over the years. Kohli has recovered his form to a great extent in white-ball cricket, but he is miles away from his best in red-ball cricket and this is hurting India.
Ajinkya Rahane’s performance better
Ajinkya Rahane (7/10, good): A surprising selection and the most talked about player in the batting line-up, Rahane turned out to be India’s best performer in the final. Rahane returned to the Test team about one and a half years after KL Rahul was injured. The former vice-captain scored 89 runs in the first innings. Rahane also contributed 46 runs in the second innings. He got 7 out of 10 numbers. Hope he gets another chance in future.
Ravindra Jadeja (6/10, above average): Ravindra Jadeja was selected ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin mainly because of his batting. He justified this to some extent by scoring a fluent 48 in the first innings. But Jadeja could not even open the account in the second innings. Jadeja definitely proved his usefulness by taking 4 wickets in both the innings. He has got 6 out of 10 numbers which is above average.
KS Bharath (4/10, bad): Bharat is never going to be Rishabh Pant with the bat but he did a great job behind the stumps. But if he wants to become India’s backup keeper in Tests, then he will have to work hard on his batting. India missed Pant in this match.
Umesh Yadav’s worst performance among bowlers
Shardul Thakur (5/10, average): His blistering 51 in the first innings ensured India stayed in the game, but Shardul would not be particularly happy with the way he bowled. He achieved some lucky successes in the first innings, but failed in the second innings. He did not get a single success in 8 overs.
Mohammed Shami (4/10, bad): In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami did not live up to the expectations. He threw so many shot balls, the team had to bear the brunt of it. Shami took 2 wickets in the first innings and two wickets in the second innings as well. But only 4 wickets for the opener was not enough for the team’s victory. He could not bother the Kangaroo batsmen at all with his fast bowling.
Umesh Yadav (2/10, very poor): Yadav looked largely unprepared and out of rhythm during the WTC final. There was no aggression in his bowling and his line and length in the first innings were also worrying. He bowled a very wide ball to Warner and Head. In the second innings, he did better and took the wickets of Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja, but his future in the Indian Test team looks bleak.
Mohammed Siraj (7/10, good): Mohammad Siraj bowled openly in the first innings and took four wickets. It was because of him that India was able to stop Australia from crossing 500. He bowled well in the second innings but got only one wicket. There should be no dearth of opportunities for Siraj right now.
