Team India’s doors closed for Shikhar Dhawan! Chief selector Ajit Agarkar gave hints

Shikhar Dhawan’s name is not in the team. Ajit Agarkar called Shikhar Dhawan a great player. But he said that the team still has many options for the opening batting. It seems that Dhawan will not get a place in the near future. Agarkar said on Monday that it is very important for Shreyas Iyer and Lokesh Rahul to get enough opportunities to play before the ODI World Cup.
Both Rahul and Iyer have been included in the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup. Rahul is again minorly injured. His injury however has no relation to the original injury. Due to this injury, it is doubtful for Rahul to play in the opening match against Pakistan on September 2 in the Asia Cup. Talking to the media after the announcement of the team, Agarkar did not rule out the possibility that Rahul could be out of the first match.
Before the selection meeting, there were question marks on the fitness of Rahul and Iyer. Both these players are making a comeback after recovering from thigh and back pain respectively. Iyer played his last match in March while Rahul played in May. He said, ‘Rahul plays as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the team. It is expected that he will be available for selection from the first match itself. Both Rahul and Iyer were injured for a long time and have worked hard to get fit.
Rahul has suffered a minor setback due to his injury again but we hope that everything will be fine. He is a very important player. Announcing the team, Agarkar said here that wicket-keeper batsman Sanju Samson has been included in the team as Rahul’s backup. Recently, Rahul was in trouble due to a minor injury. This former fast bowler said, ‘According to what we have been told, this injury (in Rahul’s case) is not very serious. We still have a month and a half before the World Cup, hopefully they (Iyer and Rahul) will get enough cricket before that.
Agarkar also clarified that Ishaan Kishan is currently in the team as an alternative to Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as an opener. Due to this, the possibility of Shikhar Dhawan’s return in the near future has been ruled out. He said, ‘Rohit is not a bad player, this year has been great for Shubman. Same is the situation with Kishan.
Agarkar said that Shikhar has been a great player for India. At this time these three players are doing well and you can keep only 15 players in the team. Unfortunately someone has to be out. At the moment he is our favorite opener.
On not selecting Yuzvendra Chahal in the team, Agarkar said, ‘He is one of the players who performed brilliantly for India. Sometimes things depend on the balance or combination of the team. Akshar (Patel) has done really well and he can bat as well. Kuldeep (Yadav) has done brilliantly. In such a situation, it is difficult to include two wrist spinners in the team. Kuldeep is a little ahead of him (Chahal).
