New Delhi: India’s Kiran George stunned world number nine Shi Yuqi of China in straight games to storm into the men’s singles pre-quarterfinals of the Thailand Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Wednesday but two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu won the first round. She got eliminated after losing in the round itself. Ashmita Chahila and Saina Nehwal also made it to the second round in women’s singles, while world number four men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals, apart from Lakshya Sen. Kidambi Srikanth and B Sai Praneeth Men She made an early exit in singles but Odisha Open winner Kiran saw off 2018 World Championship silver medalist and third seed Shi Yuqi 21-18 22-20. Kiran will next take on Weng Hong Yang of China. Lakshya Sen, who learned the tricks of badminton at the Prakash Padukone Academy along with Kiran, also defeated Chinese Taipei’s Wang Tzu Wei 21-23 21-15 21-15 in a hard-fought match.

He is likely to face All England champion Li Shi Feng of China in the next round. The top seeded men’s doubles pair of Commonwealth Games champions Satwik and Chirag also saw off the Danish pair of Rasmus Jair and Fredrik Sogaard 21-13 18-21 21-17 in a thrilling contest. Former world champion Sindhu, however, went down in the first round itself 8-21 21-18 18-21 against Michelle Li of Canada in a match that lasted 62 minutes.

In other matches of the day, qualifier Ashmita beat compatriot Malavika Bansod 21-17 21-14 while London Olympics bronze medalist Saina got the better of Canada’s Wen Yu Zheng 21-13 21-7. Ashmita will next take on Rio Olympics gold medalist Carolina Marin, seeded fourth. Saina is likely to face Bing Jiao of China. World Championships 2021 silver medalist Srikanth, however, lost 8-21 21-16 14-21 to China’s Weng Hong Yeng.

Tokyo Olympian Praneeth too went down 14-21 16-21 against France’s Christo Popov. Orleans Masters winner Priyanshu Rajawat also failed to cross the first round hurdle, going down 19-21 10-21 against Ng Ji Yong of Malaysia. Former world number 11 Sameer Verma, who recently won the Slovenia Open title, also lost 15-21 15-21 to Magnus Johansen of Denmark. In women’s doubles, Ashwini Bhat K and Shikha Gautam also lost 11-21 6-21 to third seeded Korean pair of Baek Ha Na and Lee So Hee.
