Copenhagen: India’s pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made it to the quarterfinals of the World Championship with a scintillating performance. Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated the Australian pair of Kenneth Tze Hui Chu and Ming Chuen Lim in straight games. Indian pair of Trisa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand put up a strong show to enter the women’s doubles third round with a straight game win over Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ching Hui and Yang Chin Tun.

The world number two pair of Satwik and Chirag had won the first bronze medal in the previous edition. They defeated their Australian rivals 21-16 21-9 in 30 minutes. The defending Commonwealth Games champions pair will now face 10th seeds Leo Rawly Karnando and Daniel Martin of Indonesia. Earlier, the world number 19 pair of Gayatri and Trisa had got a bye in the first round. They beat the 37th-ranked pair of Chang and Yang 21-18 21-10 in 38 minutes.

The Indian pair had reached the semi-finals in the previous two editions of the All England Championship and will now face top seeded Chinese pair of Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan in the next round. Trisa and Gayatri were initially trailing 2-5 but soon rallied to reduce their opponent’s errors to 8-6.

Although Chang and Yang were tied at 8-8, the Indian pair took an 11-9 lead at the break after the Taiwanese pair hit the net. Trisa and Gayatri lead 14-11 after the break. Then Trisa committed a few unforced errors but the Indian pair of Chang and Yang managed to grab four game points from a service error. The Indian pair sealed the game as Yang’s shot hit the net.

In the second game, the Indian pair maintained the same momentum and were leading 8-5 at one stage. A powerful serve saw the Indians maintain a three-point lead at the break. Gayatri and Trisa soon lead 14-8. He was called for a service fault due to height but it had no effect and he led 19-10 as his opponent made unforced errors. The Indian pair were ahead by 10 match points when Yang’s forehand hit the net and then won the match when their opponent went wide.
