Karnataka | Potential Asian and Olympic Games hopefuls will get a chance to test their mettle in the second season of the throw and jump events, which will begin from March 1. A total of 195 athletes will compete over two days in eight events. Shot put, discus throw, hammer throw and javelin (Day 1) and long jump, high jump, triple jump and pole vault (Day 2) will be played.
The event, which will be the first senior competition to be held at the Athletics Federation of India (AFI)-sanctioned IIS, will serve as an opportunity for athletes to qualify for the Asian Games, World Championships and next year’s Olympic Games.
IIS will be represented in the competition by Praveen Chitrawal, who is best known for his silver medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships and national indoor record-breaking triple jump. Joining them in the same discipline will be 2022 Commonwealth Games gold and silver medalists – Eldhoj Paul and Abdullah Abubakar respectively, who are eager to extend their season.
Long-jumper Jeswin Aldrin, who also started his season with a silver medal at the Asian Athletics Championships, will also be in action for his first outdoor competition of 2023. Jesse Sandesh will compete in the men’s long jump.
Among women, Abhinaya Shetty will again look to put up a strong performance after finishing in the top eight at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships with a jump of 1.75m. She will take on fellow IIS athlete Rubina Yadav, while Sharvali Parulekar will compete in the women’s triple jump.(IANS)
