Current marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptom and his coach Gervais Hakizimana have died in a road accident in Nairobi, Kenya. Since then the entire sports world is immersed in mourning. It had been less than 5 months since Kelvin broke the world record. It was said about him that he would add a new chapter in sports history but this was not possible.

Let us tell you that Kelvin Kipton broke the marathon record with 2:01:35 in the Chicago Marathon last year. He was driving the car when the fatal accident occurred in Eldoret.

Kelvin Kiptum started his journey differently. Starting with the half-marathon circuit, he made his way to the full marathon in 2022. Along with this, he shocked the world with the fourth fastest time recorded on debut in the Valencia Marathon. The spectacular achievement was confirmed by World Athletics just a week before Kiptum’s untimely death.

Kelvin Kiptum’s road accident occurred near the Rift Valley town of Eldoret. The region is known for some of the best distance runners in the world. Kelvin was driving a Toyota Premio, where he suddenly lost control of the car. His car went off the road and collided with a tree. Apart from Kiptum, his coach Gervais Hakizimana of Rwanda also lost his life in this incident.
