Wrestling association is in controversies since last one year
It is noteworthy that the wrestling association has been in continuous controversies for the last one year. In the month of January, the names of some female wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, came into the limelight as they had accused association president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and protested to remove him from the post. Many male wrestlers including Bajrang Punia participated in the wrestlers’ demonstration. When the issue of wrestlers’ performance became bigger, Brij Bhushan Singh resigned. After that, elections were held for the Wrestling Association on 21 December and this election came into controversy when the new president Sanjay Singh was accused of being close to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and implementing his decisions.
Sakshi Malik announces retirement
After the appointment of Sanjay Singh, Sakshi Malik announced her retirement and some wrestlers also talked about returning the award. Bajrang Punia had returned his Padma Shri. After all these protests, the Sports Ministry dissolved the association on 24 December and asked to form a new committee, in which a woman member was also asked to be included.
