Tilak Varma: After being selected in the 17-man squad for the Asia Cup, young Indian batsman Tilak Verma said he wanted to play ODIs but never in his wildest dreams would he make his debut directly in the Asia Cup. This 20-year-old young batsman has dominated the cricket world these days. Tilak caught the eye of Indian cricket fans and team selectors of Team India after his strong performances for Mumbai in two consecutive IPL seasons.

Tilak also has the technique, the hunger to perform and the ability to change his game depending on the delicacy of the occasion. Be it rotating the strike or hitting big shots on the ground, this youngster is the best at everything. Perhaps this is the reason why Team India included this player in the team for a big stage like Asia Cup. However, for Tilak it was a dream come true.

It is the hard work of Tilak, whose fruits he is getting now. Tilak has achieved this position on the basis of strong performance in the last 17 months. In March 2022, he got a chance to play in IPL for the first time. He scored 397 runs in his first season (IPL-2022) and 343 runs in his second season (IPL-2023) while playing for Mumbai Indians. After performing brilliantly in two consecutive seasons, he got a chance to debut in T20 International cricket for India against West Indies in August-2023. Where he once again won the hearts of the fans with his performance. The 20-year-old got a chance to play in all the five T20 matches on the West Indies tour and Tilak scored 173 runs in his debut international series.

His form and performance against the West Indies paid off for the youngster when he got a place in India’s squad for the Asia Cup-2023. He has never played ODI cricket but can debut in this format in the Asia Cup starting on 30 August. In a video shared by the BCCI, Tilak talked about his Asia Cup selection and also praised skipper Rohit Sharma.

Tilak said, ‘I never even dreamed that I would make my debut in the Asia Cup directly and that too in the ODI team. It was always my dream that I would debut for India in ODIs. But to play in the Asia Cup directly, it’s a big thing for me. I’ve always dreamed of this. In the same year, I got a chance to make my T20 debut and now got a place in the ODI team as well. This is one of my dreams and I am just preparing for it.

Referring to Rohit Sharma, he said, ‘Rohit Bhaiya always supported me. When I used to play in IPL, he used to come to me. In the initial days, I was a little nervous. So he himself used to come to me and talk about the game. He told me whenever you want to talk, you can come to me any time. I will always be there for you. This support will always be special for me.
