Former India cricketers Ravi Shastri and Sandeep Patil on Friday advocated the inclusion of talented Tilak Verma in the middle order of the Indian team for the ODI World Cup.
The World Cup will be organized in India from 5 October to 19 November. Shastri said that the inclusion of 20-year-old Verma in the team would be beneficial as he is a left-handed batsman.
Ravi Shastri told Star Sports, ‘I am very impressed with Tilak Verma’s performance and I want a left-handed batsman in the middle order. If I want players like Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina in the middle order, I will definitely consider his (Tilak Verma) name.
Shastri said, ‘Sandeep Patil and MSK Prasad have been selectors and if I were a selector with my panel, then I would look at the current form and see how he is scoring.’
Tilak Verma recently had an impressive performance in his debut series against the West Indies in international cricket. Shastri’s 1983 World Cup-winning teammate Patil also praised Verma. He also advocated keeping Suryakumar Yadav in the team.
Patil said, ‘Definitely I would like to keep Tilak Verma and Suryakumar Yadav in the team. Who will be included in the playing eleven, this decision can be taken by looking at the opposing team, but both Tilak Verma and Suryakumar Yadav will be in my team.
Due to the great performance in the West Indies, Tilak Verma impressed the selectors with his performance and it is proof that he has been included in the team for the tour of Ireland as well. Tilak will once again have a chance to prove himself on the Ireland tour.
Tilak performed impressively for Mumbai Indians in the 2023 IPL, batting lower down the order in tough conditions. In 11 innings, he scored 343 runs at an average of 42.88 and a strike rate of 164.11. The Hyderabadi player also has an impressive record in domestic cricket in the 50-over format. In 25 List A games, he scored 1236 runs at an average of 56.18.
