Melbourne: Former Australia Test captain Tim Paine announced his retirement on Friday after the end of Tasmania’s Sheffield Shield first-class match against Queensland. Wicket-keeper batsman Penn played a total of 35 Test matches for Australia, of which he captained in 23 Test matches from 2018 to 2021. Paine became Australia’s 46th Test captain after Steve Smith was stripped of his captaincy in South Africa in 2018 after being implicated in a ball-tampering scandal.

The 38-year-old wicket-keeper was given a guard of honor as he left the ground at Bellerive Oval after the match. He hasn’t played international cricket since January 2021 and last played domestic white-ball cricket in December 2022. Tim Paine stepped down as Test captain in 2021 after it was revealed he had sent offensive messages to a former Cricket Tasmania employee. He maintained that he was innocent, but quit when he learned that his texts were to be made public.

Paine made his Test debut in 2010 against Pakistan at Lord’s. He averaged 32.63 in Test matches with a highest score of 92. Apart from this, he took 157 catches and stumped out as a wicketkeeper. He also played 35 One Day Internationals for Australia. He has 890 runs in ODIs at an average of 27.81. This also includes a century innings. Penn has scored 82 runs in 12 T20 International matches.
