The ad-hoc committee had earlier wanted to hold the trial on 10 August but reversed its decision in view of the WFI elections on 12 August. The Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed these elections on 11 August and the next hearing of the case would be on 28 August. According to a statement issued by the ad-hoc committee, “The players will be weighed at seven in the morning on the day of the competition and they will be given a relaxation of two kilos.”

The trial will be conducted in the following categories.

• Men’s Freestyle: 57kg, 61kg, 65kg, 70kg, 74kg, 79kg, 86kg, 92kg, 97kg and 125kg.

• Greco-Roman: 55 kg, 60 kg, 63 kg, 67 kg, 72 kg, 77 kg, 82 kg, 87 kg, 97 kg and 130 kg.

• Women’s Wrestling: 50kg, 53kg, 55kg, 57kg, 59kg, 62kg, 65kg, 68kg, 72kg and 76kg.

This will be the format of the trial

The ad-hoc panel said that if less than eight wrestlers are eligible for trials in a weight category, the Nordic system will be applied. Under the Nordic system, wrestlers fight each other in a round-robin format. After the match is over, the wrestlers are ranked according to the number of wins. Top three will win medals. The ad-hoc panel’s statement said that if eight or more wrestlers are eligible in a weight category, a straight elimination format will be conducted. The panel also said that it may implement a “seeding system” during the tests.

There was an uproar over exemption in selection

Wrestlers protested against the exemption of Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat from the selection trials for the Asian Games. The Delhi High Court earlier this month refused to interfere with the exemption granted to top wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia from trials for the Asian Games. Justice Subramaniam Prasad had dismissed the pleas of Under-20 world champion Anand Panghal and Under-23 Asian champion Sujit Kalkal against allowing direct entry to Phogat and Poonia to participate in the tournament. The judge had said, ‘The writ petition is dismissed.’

Why did the matter reach the court

Phogat (53kg) and Punia (65kg) were given direct entry for the Asian Games by the Indian Olympic Association’s ad hoc committee, while other wrestlers had to earn their places in the Indian team through selection trials on 22 and 23 July. . Panghal and Kalkal moved the High Court on July 19 challenging the exemption and demanded a fair selection process for the quadrangular showpiece event.
