Lok Sabha Election 2024: Jalpaiguri parliamentary constituency was once known as the fort of the Left Front. At present there is a BJP MP from here. However, once in between it also came under the control of Trinamool. Talking about Lok Sabha elections, this seat remained in the account of Congress from 1962 to 1971. In 1977, Khagendra Nath Dasgupta had won from here as an independent candidate. But since then CPI(M) had dominance in this area. From 1980 to 2014, only CPI(M) MP remained from here. In 1980, CPI(M) candidate Subodh Sen won from here. Then Manik Sanyal in 1984 and 1989. In 1991 and 1996, Jitendra Nath Das won on CPI(M) ticket. Minati Sen won in 1998, 1999 and 2004. The last CPI(M) MP from here was Mahendra Kumar Roy. He won from here in 2009.

Lok Sabha elections here on 19th April

But after the change of power in the state in 2011, Trinamool candidate Vijay Chandra Barman won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from here. In 2014, Mr. Barman got 4.94 lakh votes and with 38 percent votes, he pushed CPI(M)’s Mahendra Kumar Roy to second place. Mahendra Kumar Rai got 4.25 lakh votes. But in 2019 the tables turned. BJP candidate Jayant Kumar Roy stood first with 7.60 lakh votes. He got 50.65 percent votes. Trinamool’s Vijay Chandra Barman stood second by getting 5.76 lakh votes. This time the Lok Sabha elections will be held here on 19th April. Trinamool Congress has given ticket to Nirmal Chandra Rai. Whereas CPI(M) has made Devraj Burman its candidate.

BJP’s graph has continuously increased here

Jalpaiguri’s history is linked to olives

Jalpaiguri. The word Jalpaiguri comes from ‘Jalpai’ and ‘Guri’. ‘Jalpai’ means olive. Olives were once found in abundance in this area. ‘Gudi’ means field. Jalpaiguri is also associated with the word ‘Jalapesh’ which is a form of Shiva. Although originally this word also comes from ‘je-le-pe-gu-di’ which is a Bhutanese word. It represents a place where warm clothes, blankets and other essential items are traded. Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, this region also has international borders with Bhutan and Bangladesh. Apart from this, it also shares its borders with Darjeeling and Assam. Opposition parties are accusing the ruling party of flouting election rules.

The battle cry for Lok Sabha elections has been sounded. The election campaign of all the political parties has also started in full swing. Meanwhile, the opposition parties of the state have accused Jalpaiguri of not following the election conduct rules. Despite the instructions of the Election Commission, various posters and banners of the ruling party are put up across the city. Most of the people working as Election Commission employees are said to be Trinamool workers. Despite opening the posters and banners of the opposition parties, there is an allegation of not touching the posters and banners of the ruling party. It is alleged that a huge hoarding of the ruling party including the photograph of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been put up in Banarhat, Gayerkata. It is noteworthy that the Election Commission has directed that political parties cannot use any government or private place in the country as soon as the elections are announced.

Accusation of not following the electoral conduct law

Banners, posters, photographs of the Prime Minister or the Chief Minister cannot be used there. Even the work that the government is doing for the common people cannot be shown. After the announcement of elections, if any poster or banner is put up then it will have to be removed by the responsible officers working on behalf of the Election Commission. Despite there being no banner of CPI(M) or BJP or any other party in Gayerkata, huge banners of Trinamool are put up in various markets near the National Highway. The opposition alleges that only the employees who worked for the state government throughout the year are doing election duty today. Therefore, despite not delaying in opening the banners of other parties, he is not touching the banner of the state government. The allegation is also that those employees are being pressurized not to display any banner or poster of Trinamool.

Poster war before elections

Even before the Lok Sabha elections, the atmosphere in Jalpaiguri parliamentary constituency has become heated. A poster war is also being seen against the BJP MP. Posters against BJP MP were seen in Jalpaiguri city. Posters have been put up across the city declaring him missing. Trinamool repeatedly alleges that the MP is not seen in Jalpaiguri. Two days ago, the post of Jayant Kumar Rai’s disappearance was first seen on social media by posting his picture. Now posters with his photo have been put up across the city. BJP alleges that Trinamool is behind putting up the posters. However, Trinamool has rejected the allegations.

Violence during elections is common in Bengal

Incidents like violence during elections, stopping candidates from nomination, obstructing campaigning are common in Bengal. A glimpse of this was seen in the Assembly and Panchayat elections. Now Lok Sabha elections are ahead. Bengal is starting to come into its political colours. From this seat, Trinamool has fielded Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy, while CPI(M) has given ticket to newcomer Devraj Burman. Recently, candidates from both the parties reached the District Magistrate’s office with a colorful procession to file nominations. When CPI(M) party Devraj Burman arrived to submit nomination papers, an uproar started. Devraj got permission to go to the District Magistrate office, but the police stopped other CPI(M) workers and supporters outside. Angered by this, youth leader of Jalpaiguri district CPI(M) Shubhamoy Ghosh said that Trinamool is getting votes by keeping the police in front. Meanwhile, Jalpaiguri District Trinamool Secretary Vikas Malakar said that we have filed the nomination following all the rules. It is not known whether they (CPI-M) had permission or not.

Politics of stalking and threatening candidates has started

Let us tell you that in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Jayant Kumar Rai had won from this seat. But BJP has not yet announced its candidate for this seat. Trinamool is taking a dig at BJP regarding this. Jalpaiguri District Trinamool Congress President Mahua Gop said that BJP says that this fight is between Modi and Mamata, so where is Modi’s candidate? Countering this, Jalpaiguri District BJP Secretary Shyam Prasad said that you (Trinamal) do not need to worry about BJP. You worry about yourself. If you go among the public, the public will keep you captive.

BJP’s concern increased due to increase in Left’s vote

Due to increase in Left Front’s vote in the last Panchayat elections, BJP’s concern has increased in Jalpaiguri Lok Sabha constituency. In the last Lok Sabha elections, a major share of the votes received by the Left Front was received by the BJP. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the Left Front got only seven percent votes. But in the Panchayat elections, the vote share of the Left Front increased to 23.9 percent. However, according to BJP District President Bapi Goswami, there is nothing to worry about as the Left’s vote share has increased. BJP got 41 percent votes in Dhupguri by-election. Whereas the Left Front got only eight percent votes. Here, the Left Front is quite excited about the increase in vote share in the Panchayat elections. CPI(M) District Secretary Salil Acharya said that people have seen from their experience that both Trinamool and BJP do not care about the interests of the common people. People have again supported the Left. Therefore, compared to the last Lok Sabha elections, the vote share of the Left in the Panchayat elections has increased by 16 percent. He expressed hope that the Left candidate will win from this Lok Sabha constituency. Meanwhile, Forward Bloc leader Govind Rai says that people are flocking in support of the Left Front candidate in the Lok Sabha election campaign. He has full hope that the Left candidate will win the Lok Sabha elections.
