Two-time Paralympic gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia elected PCI president unopposed

Devendra Jhajharia, who won two gold medals in the Paralympics, was elected unopposed as the President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) on Saturday. He will replace another famous para athlete Deepa Malik. Jhajharia, 42, who won gold medals in the F46 category at the 2004 Athens and 2016 Rio Paralympics, was the only candidate for the top post. Rather, all the new officials were elected unopposed.
PCI elections were held for the posts of President, two Vice-Secretaries, General Secretary, Treasurer, two Joint Secretaries and five Executive Committee members. Initially eight candidates filed their nomination papers for the post of five executive committee members, but later three of them withdrew their nominations. This was to complete the formalities and Returning Officer Umesh Sinha handed over the election certificates to all the new office bearers under the leadership of Jhajharia.
Goa international coach and referee Jaywant Hammanvar was elected unopposed as general secretary. R Chandrashekhar and Satya Prakash Sangwan will be the two vice-presidents while Sunil Pradhan was the lone candidate for the post of treasurer. Lalit Thakur and T Diwakar are the two joint secretaries. Last month, the Sports Ministry had suspended PCI after not conducting elections on time. But after PCI started the election process on March 5, the ministry canceled the suspension.
Jhajharia from Rajasthan also won a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021. She won gold at the World Championships in 2013 and silver in 2015 (both in F46) as well as a silver medal at the Asian Para Games in 2014. He is the only Padma Bhushan awardee (2022) among para athletes, besides he is the only para athlete to win two Paralympic gold medals for India. He was awarded the Khel Ratna in 2017, before which he also received the Arjuna Award (2004) and Padma Shri (2012).
