New Delhi, April 15 (Hindustan Reporter) Special Olympics India on Monday organized a grand farewell ceremony for the Indian contingent traveling to Dhaka for the Special Olympics South Asia 7-a-side Unified Football Tournament 2024. The unified football tournament is scheduled to be held in Dhaka from 16 to 20 April 2024.
Guest of Honor Dr Taranjit and Dean of MRIIRS Dr NC Wadhwa (IAS, Retd) were present at the event. Special Olympics India Executive Director Virendra Kumar Mahendru also addressed the audience. To the delight of the spectators present and to showcase the talent of the Indian athletes, two elimination matches for both men’s and women’s teams were also organised. Students of Manav Rachna University also participated in the matches.
Two teams from India will participate in the tournament, men and women respectively. A team consists of 11 athletes and unified partners each, as well as five coaches. Who are representing eight states (Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Delhi).
Nine unified football teams representing five countries – Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Maldives and Hong Kong will participate in the event. The matches will be held at Bashundhara Kings Sports Arena Stadium (Bashundhara), Dhaka.
Inspiring the Indian contingent, Dr Mallika Nadda, Chairperson of Special Olympics India, said – “The 7-a-side Unified Football Tournament in Dhaka focuses on the outstanding power of Unified Sports in connecting people of different backgrounds and abilities on and off the playing field. There is another opportunity to attract. Given the practice and rigorous schedule put in place by the trainers, coaches and teammates, I have no doubt that our teams will perform at their best.
Manav Rachna University (Faridabad) has hosted many of our national level camps, including this one. This has been very important in carrying out our preparation properly. Such events also expose us to some great partnerships, which help us strengthen our initiatives to promote inclusion through sports. The energy and bond that has emerged within the team is amazing and I wish all the participating teams the best of luck so that they can once again showcase their amazing capabilities to the world.”
