Centurion. Veteran Indian batsman Virat Kohli on Thursday became the first batsman to score 2,000 runs in a calendar year for a record seventh time on the third day of the first Test at the SuperSport Park.
Earlier, Virat jointly held the record with Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara for scoring most two thousand runs in a calendar year (six times).
Virat Kohli (1934 runs before this Test) needed 66 runs to reach two thousand runs across all formats in 2023. He was out on 38 runs in the first innings. This unique record became his name as soon as he scored 28 runs in the second innings.
Kohli also became the leading run-scorer for India across all formats in South Africa. He has gone ahead of Sachin Tendulkar’s 1724 runs (including six centuries).
Kohli now has 1750 runs in 29 matches across all formats in South Africa, which includes five centuries. The former India captain tops the Indian batting charts in South Africa with 898 runs in ODIs at an average of 74.83.
