Last year, Kohli ended a nearly three-year drought of centuries in international cricket when he scored a century in a T20 match against Afghanistan during the Asia Cup. After that, in the T20 World Cup, he won the match against Pakistan by playing an extraordinary innings and playing incredible shots, due to which the ongoing criticism of his batting and strike rate stopped for some time. Since then, Kohli has also scored centuries in One Day cricket and then in the Ahmedabad Test against Australia. Overall, in the last 9 months, Kohli has been reborn as a batsman where he is scoring hundreds in every format of cricket with the same ease as he used to do during his heyday. Back-to-back hundreds in IPL 2023 are testimony to the same stupendous form.

Kohli completed century in 61 balls

Kohli says, ‘You have to read the situations and when the situation demands, you have to hit the big shots on that occasion. I am feeling really good at the moment and I am liking the way I am batting. Even though Kohli is quite satisfied and happy with his batting, critics are not missing out on giving the example of Shubman Gill’s innings in comparison during the same match. If Kohli’s century strike rate is around 165 then Gill’s is above 200. Kohli had 13 fours and only 1 six in 61 balls, while Gill hit 5 fours in 52 balls and the most crucial thing was that he hit 8 sixes.

Gill himself has admitted that he has modeled his batting after Kohli, but a young Gill has understood that by sticking to bookies and ground shots, he will run the risk of becoming irrelevant in cricket’s most flamboyant format. Perhaps Kohli can learn something from his protege Gill’s perspective as well and give a befitting reply to those critics who are still doubting his continuation in Team India. One thing is for sure that if Kohli sets his mind to, he can surely transform himself. Anyway, for 2024, Team India might need an experienced veteran in a team with very young players.
