New Delhi: Former India opener Virender Sehwag hopes that Virat Kohli will score many centuries in the World Cup and become the highest run-scorer of the tournament. After 2011, 2015 and 2019, Virat Kohli is all set to play in his fourth ODI World Cup. In the 2019 World Cup, Kohli scored 443 runs in 9 innings at an average of 55.37, which included five half-centuries.

Sehwag told Cricbuzz, ‘Chiku (Virat Kohli) did not score a single century in the 2019 World Cup. This year I hope he will score many centuries and be the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Hopefully India wins the World Cup and then, I want to carry him on my shoulders and take him around the field. Just like it was done during the time of Sachin Tendulkar.

Sehwag, a member of the 2011 World Cup-winning team, said Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma deserve to win the upcoming tournament. Rohit missed out on being a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team and is now captain of the team when the tournament returns to home soil. Sehwag said, ‘These two (Rohit and Kohli) senior players deserve to win the World Cup. Rohit Sharma was very close to being selected for the 2011 World Cup but missed out. He later became the king of ODI, he deserves to win the World Cup trophy once because he is a brilliant player.

1983 and 2011 champions India will begin their campaign against five-time champions Australia at the MA Chidambaram in Chennai on October 8. This is the first time that India is hosting a full-fledged Men’s ODI World Cup and Sehwag wants the team to end its decade-long drought of winning global trophies this year.
