Was thinking about not playing World Cup due to injury: Akshar Patel

Raipur . India’s left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel has admitted that he was thinking about missing the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup on home soil due to a left quadriceps injury.

The 29-year-old Axar was dropped from the World Cup squad late due to injury in the Asia Cup and Ravichandran Ashwin was included in his place.

“You have to be (disappointed). The World Cup was in India, but he got injured. For the first few days, I was thinking about not being able to play due to injury, especially when the team was performing well.

“After 5-10 days, I was back in training and doing my rehabilitation,” he said in the post-match press conference. But when you are out due to injury and cannot do anything for those 5-10 days, you feel a little bad. After that, I returned to regular life. I was upset, but it happened because of the injury; It is not in anyone’s hands. It is an integral part of the game. ,

Axar made his return to international cricket through the ongoing T20 series against Australia, laying the groundwork for the hosts’ 20-run win with his brilliant spell of 3-16 in the fourth match in Raipur on Friday night. He admitted to being concerned about how his left quadriceps would cope with the rigors of the international game.

“If you are away from international cricket for some time due to injury and then come back, you try to prove yourself and you also have to take care of your body. I need to get back into the rhythm ( One match at a time. When you come back from injury, you try to protect that part of the body. You don’t give your full effort. It sticks in my mind.”

“It doesn’t happen that way because the trainer tells you in advance that nothing will happen. But while running, you think what if something happens to the quadricep again. But after the first few matches, I started getting into the routine. But it was back. Now I don’t feel anything like that and the work I have done in the last one and a half months is bearing fruit now, so overall I am happy.

With the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in the United States and West Indies from June 4-30 next year, Axar said preparations for the mega event have begun for the Indian team.

“Before the T20 World Cup, I don’t think there are too many T20 matches scheduled in India, maybe 9-10 matches. So, we have to plan now and prepare for it because the World Cup is in June 2024 and before that There is IPL in between so planning is going on.

“All the players have been briefed about their respective roles and what positions they will play. Once Rahul (Dravid, head coach) sir comes back, there will be detailed discussions. But we know what we have to do in this series. So there is no confusion.”
