WBC 2023: Deepak Bhoria did wonders in World Championship, beat Olympic medal winner

New Delhi: Fast-rising Indian boxer Deepak Bhoria staged a spectacular comeback to beat Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Saken Bibossinov of Kazakhstan in the 51kg pre-quarterfinals of the World Championships on Sunday. In such a situation, now star boxer Deepak Bhoria remains in the headlines. Deepak, who was trailing by split decisions in the first two rounds, produced a brilliant performance in the last three minutes to emerge victorious after the bout review. Deepak Bhoria was selected in place of world championship silver medalist Amit Panghal in the tournament. The Indian player registered a 5-2 win in the pre-quarterfinals against 2021 world champion Bibosinov. Two-time Commonwealth medalist Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg) cruised into the quarterfinals with a 5-0 win over Russia’s Eduard Savin. Deepak started the bout a bit slow but quickly found the momentum.

He landed some good punches on his opponent but was down 2-3. After trailing in the second round as well, Deepak regained his momentum in the third round and impressed the judges by landing some powerful punches on the rival boxer. After registering a memorable win, Deepak said, ‘My aim from the beginning of the bout was to play with composure and score as many points as possible.

Deepak No further said, ‘The first two rounds were tough but I kept my composure and waited for the right time to attack.’ Hussamuddin, on the other hand, dominated from the start of the bout. He outpointed the Russian in all three rounds and won via unanimous decision. To reach the semi-finals, he will have to overcome the challenge of second seed Umid Rustamov of Azerbaijan.
