Weightlifting, modern pentathlon approved for 2028 Olympics, boxing still under doubt

Mumbai . The inclusion of boxing in the sports program at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 is still uncertain, even though the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has approved the inclusion of weightlifting and modern pentathlon.

These three sports were not among the 28 sports that were approved by the IOC for Los Angeles 2028 in February this year. Now this recommendation will be put forward during the 141st IOC session to be held in Mumbai from Monday (October 15).

The IOC EB on Friday discussed the status of boxing as a sport in the Olympics as the International Boxing Association (IBA) has been de-recognised and has decided that it is not possible for it to organize events like Tokyo 2020. And the event will not be held in Paris in 2024 either.

IOC President Thomas Bach said that since it has no recognized partner for boxing, the EB has decided to put the sport on hold at the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028.

“Following the decision of the IOC session to withdraw recognition of the IBA, the IOC has not recognized any other governing body for Olympic boxing,” Bach said at a press conference after the two-day executive board meeting in Mumbai on Friday. Therefore, any decision regarding the inclusion of boxing in the 2028 Games program has been put on hold.”

The EB has recommended the inclusion of weightlifting in 2028 after the International Weightlifting Federation agreed to hand over anti-doping management to the International Testing Agency and give its approval to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) by the end of 2028.

The EB follows the decision by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to hand over its anti-doping management to the International Testing Agency (ITA) and its approval to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the IOC said in a statement issued after Friday’s press conference. Has recommended its inclusion in the 2028 sports programme.

It added, “The effectiveness of the anti-doping programs leading up to Paris 2024 Olympic qualification and Olympic competition will be closely monitored by the IOC, as well as the implementation of the governance and cultural changes adopted by the IWF.

The EB also recommended the inclusion of modern pentathlon in the 2028 Games programme, as the international federation for the sport has agreed to replace equestrianism, which is part of the five disciplines included in the sport, with hurdles. Another reason for its inclusion in the 2028 program was the optimization work done by the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) to reduce cost and complexity.

“Without horse riding being replaced by obstacle racing, the sport would not have been included in the program,” the IOC statement said. Modern pentathlon competitions in 2028 will now include hurdles, fencing, pistol shooting, freestyle swimming and cross-country running.(IANS)
