Preparations are being made to develop better irrigation capacity in about three lakh hectare area of Saran, Siwan and Gopalganj districts through the Western Gandak Canal System in the state. Under this, the Water Resources Department has started work on a plan to create new irrigation capacity in about 1.58 lakh hectare area. Besides, preparations have been made to develop irrigation facilities in about 1.47 lakh hectare area by repairing the main canal and the old distributaries coming out of it. Work on this has started in Saran district. Its objective is to make maximum use of flood water in Gandak for irrigation and to prevent damage caused by floods.
The area will be free from floods
According to sources, at this time the flood in Gandak river causes maximum devastation in a large area. Floods occur here sometimes in May and sometimes in June. Actually, Gandak flowing from Nepal enters Bihar through the barrage in Valmikinagar. When there is excess water, it floods and the flood of Gandak river also causes devastation in the area. In such a situation, the Water Resources Department has planned to use this flood water for maximum irrigation purposes.

At present irrigation capacity is about 11.50 lakh hectares.

Especially 5.35 lakh hectares are irrigated for Kharif crops from Gandak River. In this, about 3.38 lakh hectares are irrigated through the Eastern Canal System. At the same time, about 1.96 lakh hectare area is irrigated through the Western Canal System. Along with this, about 1.51 lakh hectares of Rabi crops are irrigated through the canals of Gandak. In such a situation, construction of new canals will increase the irrigation capacity of Gandak River. Besides, the damage caused by floods will also reduce.
