WFI Election: Delhi wrestling chief Jai Prakash leads the race for the post of president, Brijbhushan is the candidate of the faction

New Delhi: Chief of the Delhi state unit of wrestling Jai Prakash has filed nominations for three posts, including that of president, for the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections to be held on August 12. The returning officer released the official list of candidates on Tuesday. Apart from Prakash, the vice president of Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association Sanjay SinghSenior Inspector General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Dushyant Sharma and 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medalist Anita Sheoran are contesting for the post of Speaker.

Prakash and Sanjay are from the faction of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan. Anita, who is one of the witnesses in the sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan, is representing Odisha. Although this 38-year-old is from Haryana and works in the state police. Returning officer and former Jammu and Kashmir High Court judge Mahesh Mittal Kumar on Tuesday announced the official list of candidates for 15 posts.

Prakash has also filed his nomination papers for two other posts – Vice President and General Secretary. On Monday, the last date for filing nominations, the Brij Bhushan faction had kept Prakash’s name a secret and disclosed only the name of Sanjay, who is also the joint secretary of the WFI. It remains to be seen whether any of them withdraw their names on August 7, the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Dushyant attended an important meeting organized by Brij Bhushan at a five-star hotel here on July 30.
22 state associations in support of Brijbhushan
In the meeting, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader announced that he has the support of 22 of the 25 state units for the WFI elections. Dushyant has also filed nomination for the post of treasurer. There are three candidates in the fray for the post of General Secretary, out of which Chandigarh Union General Secretary and WFI Vice President Darshan Lal and Prakash Brij are from the Bhushan camp. Prem Chand Lochab is the secretary of the Railway Sports Control Board (RSPB) and may be from the rival faction.

Lochub’s name in the electoral college came as a surprise to everyone as he was not associated with any existing state body on July 25. Later his name surfaced as a representative from Gujarat. As per the WFI constitution only the members of the state executive can be part of the electoral college for the elections. Two candidates Satyapal Singh Deswal and Dushyant Sharma have filed nomination papers for the post of Treasurer. Deshwal of the Uttarakhand unit belongs to the Brij Bhushan faction.
Elections will be held for 15 posts
Elections will be held for 15 posts, including President (one), Senior Vice President (one), Vice President (four), General Secretary (one), Treasurer (one), Joint Secretary (two) and Executive Member (five). Four candidates are contesting for the post of President, three for Senior Vice President, six for Vice President, three for the sole post of General Secretary, two for Treasurer, four for Joint Secretary and 10 for the post of Executive Member. Along with the scrutiny of nomination papers, the list of validly nominated candidates will be announced on Wednesday.
