WFI Election Row: Vinesh Phogat returns Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award

World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat On Tuesday returned his Khel Ratna and Arjuna awards to the government in protest against the election of Sanjay Singh, a close aide of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, as the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Vinesh announced in a letter posted on X (formerly Twitter), I am returning my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards.
Letter written to Prime Minister Modi
Vinesh Phogat wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi informing him about returning the award. Vinesh wrote in her letter, Sakshi Malik has left wrestling and Bajrang Punia has returned his Padma Shri. Bajrang Punia and Virender Singh Yadav returned the award
Olympic medalist before Vinesh Bajrang Punia And Deaflympics champion Virender Singh Yadav had returned his Padmashree award.
Sanjay Singh was elected President of WFI, after which the wrestlers became furious.
On Thursday, Sanjay Singh was elected President of WFI. Sanjay’s group, close to Brij Bhushan, had won 13 out of 15 posts in these elections. The wrestlers had earlier demanded that no one close to Brij Bhushan should be in the WFI administration. After the elections, Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement from sports.
Sports Ministry suspends newly elected panel
The Sports Ministry, however, suspended the newly elected panel for not following the provisions of its constitution while taking the decision and asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad-hoc panel to govern wrestling.
