WFI Elections: The much-awaited elections of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) will now be held on August 7. Sources associated with WFI have given this information. The elections were earlier to be held on July 11, but Assam wrestling association The election was stayed by the Gauhati High Court following a petition seeking the right to participate in the election process. The Gauhati High Court had stayed the election on June 25, the last date for filing nominations for the electoral college. The Supreme Court had stayed this order on Tuesday (July 17). However, the Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the Gauhati High Court order. After this decision, the way for the election was cleared.
WFI elections now on August 7
The news agency PTI has given information about the new dates of elections by quoting sources. In fact, the Assam Wrestling Association had claimed that it was entitled to become an associate member of the WFI with voting rights, but the WFI refused to recognize it, despite a recommendation from its executive committee on 15 November 2014. The WFI had fixed May 7 as the date for the election before it was suspended by the Sports Ministry.
The Sports Ministry had decided to appoint a monitoring committee to look into the allegations of sexual harassment of women wrestlers by WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Along with this, WFI was ordered to suspend all its ongoing activities with immediate effect. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur had said after meeting the protesting wrestlers that the WFI elections would be held by June 30.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had then announced that the elections would be held on July 4 but the returning officer had fixed July 6 as the new date. However, the returning officer was forced to fix July 11 as the new polling date after five unaffiliated state bodies submitted claims for voting eligibility.
Wrestlers staged a sit-in
It is noteworthy that the country’s top wrestlers had protested demanding the arrest of Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, the outgoing chief of the wrestling federation. During this, the wrestlers were sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has been accused of sexual harassment by many female wrestlers. For which the Delhi Police had registered two FIRs. Last month, the police had also filed a charge sheet in this case. After getting assurance from Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, the players put their agitation on hold. The government had assured the players to file a charge sheet against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh by June 15, withdraw the FIR lodged against the players, and hold the wrestling association elections soon.
