Triathlon was invented in the United States by the San Diego Track Club in the early 1970s as an alternative to track training. The club’s first event consisted of a 10 km run, an 8 km cycling event and a 500 meter swimming event. Triathlon continued to grow in popularity over the coming years and soon established itself around the world.
What are the rules of triathlon?
The basic rules of triathlon are simple. Competitors swim a set distance to reach the finish line. Ride a bicycle and take part in running. Olympic distance triathlon consists of 1.5 km swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running. Whereas sprint distances are slightly shorter than those of triathlon races. At the World Triathlon Sprint Championships, competitors have to complete a 750 meter swim, 20 km cycling and a 5 km run. An Ironman triathlon, on the other hand, typically involves a 3.9 km swim, a 180.2 km bike ride and a 42.2 km run.
How long is a triathlon?
At the Olympics, men’s and women’s individual triathlon competitions consist of a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km bike ride, and a 10 km run. Along with this, in mixed relay, each competitor has to complete 300 meter swimming, 6.8 km cycling and 2 km run in relay format.

Triathlon debuted at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. It has been part of the Summer Olympic program ever since. At Tokyo 2020, a mixed relay event has been added to the Olympic programme. Where teams of four athletes (two women and two men) competed to win the gold medal.
