What is Javelin Throw?

Actually, ‘Javelin Throw’ is a sport based on throwing a specially designed arrow (javelin) from a distance in a long stick-like style. It is also an Olympic sport and is played in most countries. Javelin throw is a competition for both men and women.

It became a part of the Olympics after the men’s javelin throw competition started in London in 1908. This was the last event to be included in the throwing event after shot put, hammer throw and discus throw.

Javelin throw is an exhibition sport in which the player throws a long stick-like object, called a javelin, into a display area. The rules of this sport are set by the International Javelin Federation (International Association of Athletics Federations, IAAF).

Javelin weight and length: For men, the javelin weighs 800 grams and is 2.67 meters in length. Whereas for women, the weight of javelin is 600 grams and length is 2.28 meters.

Area Limits: For throwing the javelin there is an area with a line called the runup line. There is a target line to determine the place of the throw, which is called the untouchable line.

Throwing technique: There are certain technical instructions for throwing carefully, such as the integrity of the spin, grip, and runup.

Game Incorporations: After the throw, there is a subtraction line where the javelin stick does not hit anywhere. From this it is known who has thrown how far and on the basis of this the place in the competition is decided.

Scoring system of javelin throw

In javelin throw, the score is determined by the distance covered by the javelin. Once the Javelin reaches the landing zone first. So the mark of the first throw is marked by the judge with a marker usually a spike. The distance is then measured in a straight line from the marker to the inside edge of the center point of the throw arc. Measurements are taken to the nearest centimeter.

However, previously steel or fiberglass meter tapes were used for all measurements. But at present, with electronic distance measurement system, it is measured digitally through laser. Meter tape is still used in places not equipped with EDM.
