Had Ajinkya Rahane maintained his form since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he would have been the captain of the Indian team today. But then he re-established himself during the IPL and even got a chance in the World Test Championship final where he scored runs,” Jaffer said in a virtual media interaction on GeoCinema. He was also made the vice-captain for this series against the West Indies. The selectors must have seen that he has got a lot of potential. But the only thing is that he needs to score runs. If he does not score runs, then there will be difficulties for him.
KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have resumed batting practice after recovering from injuries to their right thigh and back, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Friday. Jaffer reiterated that if Rahane continues to perform well, he can be seen as the future captain of the Test team.
“The first two times he got a chance to bat, he got out early. I would say on the return of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, they are coming back after major injuries and they need to prove their fitness, score runs. But Ajinkya Rahane will have to score runs consistently as this has been his problem despite playing 80-90 Test matches (84 matches). He can be a good option for the captaincy after Rohit Sharma. Once he starts scoring runs consistently, it will all happen automatically.
Jaffer also said that Mumbai batsman Sarfraz Khan needs to focus on being consistent in scoring runs despite being overlooked for selection in the Test team. Sarfaraz has been a prolific run-scorer in the Ranji Trophy, but has not been given a place in the Test team. The right-handed batsman didn’t score any big in the recent edition of Duleep Trophy. ‘Of course he (Sarfaraz) has a right to be disappointed and there is no doubt about it. But there are some things that are out of his control. He has to focus on scoring runs again. If he fails like in Duleep Trophy or doesn’t score runs in the upcoming matches then the chances of getting a chance are slim.
