Will give Gill full chance to recover; He has not been dropped yet: Rohit Sharma

CHENNAI: India captain Rohit Sharma said the team will give opener Shubman Gill every chance to recover from the illness ahead of the opening match of the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. The right-hander has still not been ruled out of the high-octane encounter.

Gill has not taken part in India’s practice sessions at the stadium since the team landed in Chennai and on Friday it emerged that the right-handed batsman was ill, possibly due to high fever.

In the press conference before the match, Rohit said, “Everyone is fit, but Gill is not 100 percent. He is ill, but there is no concern about injury. He is not well, we are monitoring him on a daily basis. We will give him every opportunity to recover and see how he feels because he has not been ruled out.

Gill has been playing a vital role for India at the top and currently leads the run-scoring charts in ODIs this year, having scored 1230 runs in 20 matches at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03.

Rohit said, “I feel for her, and being a human being first of all, I want her to recover. As a captain, I am not thinking that I want Gill to play; I want him to get well because no one likes to be sick. But I want him to get well. He is a young boy, his body is fit and he will recover soon. ,

If Gill misses Sunday’s match against Australia, Ishan Kishan, who scored three consecutive half-centuries as an opener in the ODI series against West Indies in July, will emerge as an option to partner with captain Rohit Sharma at the top. ,

Another option is wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul, who has been a middle-order mainstay for India in this format. India head coach Rahul Dravid had said in a press conference on Friday that the medical team would decide on Gill’s participation on the match day, while also hinting at a last-minute decision.

India are looking to claim a third men’s ODI World Cup title after winning the trophy in 1983 and 2011. India will be the sole host of the event in the 13th edition of the tournament after having co-hosted it on three previous occasions in 1987, 1996 and 2011. ,

Rohit concluded, “The mood is quite good as it is before the start of every big tournament. We have come into this tournament really well prepared. So, in terms of skills, we are quite confident and looking forward to the match. (IANS)
