Women’s Premier League gets bid of Rs 4669.99 crore, breaks IPL record

New Delhi | Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Honorary Secretary Jay Shah said that the organization has earned a whopping Rs 4669.99 crore as the total bid for teams in the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL). This broke the record set by the first season of the men’s IPL in 2008. “Today is a historic day in cricket as the bidding for the inaugural teams of the WPL broke the record set by the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008. Congratulations to the winners as we raised Rs 4669.99 crore in total bidding,” he added.

She further added, “This marks the beginning of a revolution in women’s cricket and paves the way for a transformative journey not only for our women cricketers but for the entire sporting fraternity.”

“WPL will bring much-needed reforms in women’s cricket and ensure an all-encompassing ecosystem that benefits every stakeholder,” Shah tweeted on Wednesday.

The BCCI is set to announce the five franchise owners along with the home cities for the WPL later on January 25. Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore – five teams are in the race to own teams in the WPL.

As per multiple reports, the cities which have been selected as home cities for WPL are Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Indore, Lucknow and Mumbai. The inaugural edition of the WPL could be held in March this year, with the players’ auction expected to be held in early February.

Earlier, on January 16, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd won the consolidated bid for the media rights (i.e., global television rights and global digital rights) of WPL for the period 2023-2027.(IANS)
