saturday in budapest world athletics championship ,World Athletics Championships 2023) has started. in this championship India’s national record holder athlete Avinash Sable has been disappointed. Indeed, Sable failed to qualify for the final round of the 3000 meters steeplechase event at the World Championships, finishing a disappointing seventh in his heat.
Sable was expected to qualify for the finals. But he finished seventh in his heat (first) race with a timing of 8:22.24. The 28-year-old Sable, who has been training abroad for several months to prepare for the World Championships at the Sports Ministry’s expense, was exempted from participating in domestic events for the same reason. Only the top five players from each of the three heats qualify for the final round. Sable again failed on the big stage, leading until 2300 m but losing momentum, especially in the final lap, leaving him well behind the national record of 8:11.20 s.
Sable was expected to at least qualify for the final. His performance on the first day of the championship was full of frustration for the Indian camp. This was Sable’s third World Championship and the first time he failed to qualify for the finals. He had finished 11th in the finals in Eugene, USA last year and 13th in the 2019 Doha stage. World record holder Lamecha Girma of Ethiopia reached the final in a personal best of 8:15.89s, winning the third heat. Meanwhile, Olympic and world champion Soufiane El Bakali of Morocco reached the final after clocking 8:23.66 in the second heat.
The Indian players also disappointed in the men’s 20 km walk. Among 50 participants, Vikas Singh finished 28th in 1:21:58, Paramjit Singh (1:24:02) 35th and Akashdeep Singh (1:31:12) 47th. National record holder Akashdeep’s performance (National Record 1:19:55) was the most disappointing as he was the last athlete to finish the race. Two athletes could not finish the race and one was ‘disqualified’.
Sable had been training at high altitude in Colorado Springs, USA for the past few years. In fact, she started her training in the US in April last year under the guidance of renowned coach Scott Simmons, funded under the Sports Ministry’s ‘Target Olympic Podium’ scheme (TOPS). Training abroad paid off last year when Sable won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
He has been in Colorado Springs since March this year and was given permission to train in St. Moritz, Switzerland in early August before coming here. Sable has featured in three Diamond League events this season with his best time coming in Silesi, Poland, where he finished sixth in 8:11.63s to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics much earlier.
