Amritsar. Moving away from its earlier plan to bid to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027, the national federation will bid for the rights to host the 2029 season of the prestigious tournament, a top Athletics Federation of India (AFI) official said on Sunday. Ready to bid.

The AFI was previously considering bidding for the rights to host the 2027 World Athletics Championships, but has now revealed it has abandoned the plan and instead wants to host the 2029 season. “Yes, we are interested in bidding to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships,” AFI senior vice-president Anju Bobby George told PTI on the sidelines of the AFI Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The former long jump great said, “India has expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics and the 2030 Youth Olympics. So it would be great if we could host the 2029 World Athletics Championships.” The deadline for formal bids to host the World Athletics Championships 2029 has not been announced yet. World Athletics had earlier this year opened the deadline for bids to host the World Athletics Championships in 2027. The last edition of the World Athletics Championships was held in Budapest, Hungary in August and the next edition will be held in Tokyo in 2025.
