World Chess Federation bans transgender women from participating in competitions

Geneva. World chess governing body FIDE has banned male-to-female transgender players from participating in women’s competitions. FIDE has said that transgender women will not be allowed to compete in women’s competitions until its officials review the gender change. His decision has been strongly criticized by the supporters of transgender rights. FIDE said it and its member federations have been receiving recognition requests from athletes who identify as transgender. Therefore, the participation of transgender women in competitions will depend on the analysis of individual cases, which may take up to two years.

“Gender change has a significant impact on a player’s status and eligibility to participate in future competitions, so it can only be done if relevant proof of change is provided,” the federation said. The apex body said, “In this way, if someone has changed his gender from male to female, he will not have the right to participate in FIDE’s official competition for women until further decision by FIDE.” If a female player changes her gender to become a male, all her titles will be taken back. But if the player changes gender from male to female, then his previous titles will remain as before.
