In the 32nd match of the World Cup 2023, South Africa defeated New Zealand by 190 runs and once again captured number one in the points table. After winning 6 matches, Africa has 12 points, but on the basis of net run rate, India has reached second place. Batting first at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune, the South African team scored a huge score of 357 runs after losing 4 wickets in 50 overs. Then the New Zealand team was bundled out for 167 runs in 35.3 overs. Keshav Maharaj took maximum 4 wickets for South Africa. While Marco Jensen took 3 wickets.
Glenn Phillips fought alone for New Zealand
Glenn Phillips fought alone for New Zealand. He played a stormy inning of 60 runs in 50 balls with the help of 4 fours and 4 sixes. Apart from Phillips, Will Young played 33 runs and Daryl Mitchell played 24 runs. Leaving aside these three players, no New Zealand batsman could reach double figures.
De Kock and Dussen’s century, South Africa’s huge score
Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen, who were in excellent form, took advantage of the lifeline and scored centuries, due to which South Africa, despite a slow start, scored a huge score of 357 runs for four wickets in the ODI World Cup match against New Zealand on Wednesday.
De Kock scored 114 runs in 116 balls with the help of 10 fours and three fours. Dusen scored 133 runs in 118 balls which included 9 fours and 5 sixes. Both of them made a partnership of 200 runs for the second wicket. Apart from these, David Miller, who was sent to bat in the upper order, played a stormy inning of 53 runs with the help of four sixes in 30 balls. South Africa scored 119 runs in the last 10 overs. For New Zealand, Tim Southee took two wickets for 77 runs.
New Zealand won the toss and invited South Africa to bat first and then bowled tightly. The situation was such that an aggressive batsman like De Kock was able to hit only one boundary in the first 15 overs. South Africa scored 43 runs for one wicket in the first powerplay. Captain Temba Bavuma’s contribution in this was 24 runs. He hit all four fours and a six on Matt Henry before being caught in the slip off Trent Boult’s ball.
De Kock would have also returned to the pavilion after him but Glenn Phillips missed a difficult catch off the ball of Saudi, who was playing his first match in the World Cup. De Kock was then playing on 12 runs. In the 16th over of the innings, he opened his hands by hitting a four and a six on Southee and then sent Santner’s ball for six runs.
He reached 50 runs on 62 balls. After this, he broke the record of Jacques Kallis (485 runs, 2007) for scoring most runs in a single World Cup for South Africa. Dussen was also seen struggling in the beginning but he kept his feet and completed his fifty in 61 balls. Meanwhile, he hit sixes on Ravindra and Phillips.
De Kock completed his fourth century of the current World Cup by hitting a six on James Neesham in 103 balls. Dusen got two lives in this over of Neesham. He later completed his century on 101 balls by hitting a four on the same bowler, which is his second century in the current World Cup.
Tom Latham used seven bowlers to break the partnership between these two. Meanwhile, Henry had to leave the field due to muscle strain. Saudi broke this partnership by getting De Kock caught at backward point in the 40th over. This time Phillips did not make any mistake in taking the catch.
After completing his century, Dussen hit two consecutive sixes on Neesham while Miller adopted the same attitude against Phillips and took the team’s score beyond 300 runs in the 46th over. Saudi broke the 78-run partnership between the two off 43 balls by bowling Dussen. Miller completed his half-century in 29 balls by hitting a six on Neesham.
