Chennai. New Zealand’s left-arm orthodox spinner Mitchell Santner completed his M.A. here on Wednesday. Achieved the feat of taking 100 ODI wickets during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup match against Afghanistan at Chidambaram Stadium.
Heading into the match, Santner was just one scalp away from reaching the milestone of 100 wickets in ODI cricket. He took 3 wickets for 39 runs in 7.4 overs and became the highest wicket-taker (14) in the ODI World Cup 2023.
Bowling in his 98th match, the 31-year-old trapped Mohammad Nabi round the wicket to complete his 100th ODI wicket and become the second Black Caps to reach 100 ODI wickets, following in the footsteps of his fellow spinner Daniel Vettori. Became a spinner.
Santner has taken 102 wickets in 93 ODI innings at an average of 36.04 and economy of 4.85.
On the match front, New Zealand defeated Afghanistan by 149 runs thanks to impressive bowling performances from Santner and Lockie Ferguson following half-centuries from Tom Latham and Glenn Phillips.
Batting first, New Zealand were in trouble at 110/4, when a solid start was derailed by the early fall of three wickets. But Glenn Phillips (71) and Tom Latham (68) put on a 144-run partnership and helped New Zealand reach a challenging total of 288-6, helped by some poor fielding from Afghanistan.
In reply, Afghanistan were bowled out for 139 in 34.4 overs as New Zealand’s fast bowlers took wickets, with Santner performing well both with the ball and in the field.
