After the brilliant performance of their bowlers led by Healy Mathews, with the help of Nat Sciver Brunt’s unbeaten 60 off 55 balls, Mumbai Indians won the first Women’s Premier League title by defeating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets on Sunday.

With the help of a 52-run partnership for the tenth wicket between Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav, Delhi Capitals scored 131 runs for nine wickets. In response, Mumbai scored 134 runs for three wickets with three balls remaining.

Skiver Brunt handled one end and hit seven fours in his innings of 55 balls. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also played an inning of 37 runs in 39 balls. In the end, Amelia Kerr scored an unbeaten 14 runs in eight balls to lead the team to victory.

Earlier, the bowlers of Mumbai performed amazingly. Delhi’s score was 74 for three in the 11th over. After this, six wickets fell within five runs and after the 16th over the score was 79 for nine wickets. Mumbai’s overseas bowlers put up a stellar performance with Healy Mathews taking three wickets for just five runs in four overs while Isabelle Wong took three wickets for 42 runs and Amelia Kerr two wickets for 18 runs.

For Delhi, Shikha and Radha shared an unbroken 52-run partnership to take the team past 100 runs. Shikha scored an unbeaten 27 in 17 balls and Radha scored an unbeaten 27 in 12 balls. Shikha hit three fours and a six in her innings while Radha hit two fours and two sixes.

Earlier, Mathews, Wong and Kerr took eight wickets among themselves to take Mumbai to a strong position. Caribbean all-rounder Mathews equaled Sophie Ecclestone of UP Warriors by taking 16 wickets in the tournament. Wong and Kerr took 15-15 wickets in the tournament.

The final at the Brabourne Stadium got off to a dramatic start as Mumbai took the first three wickets off full toss deliveries from Wong. The first two decisions were given by the third umpire. Shafali Verma started with a six over long-on and a four off Wong on the next ball but was caught at point off Kerr. Wong then sent Alice Capsey without opening the account, whose brilliant catch was caught by Amjot Kaur at extra cover.

Jemima Rodrigues started with a four off the first ball. He hit Nat Sciver Brunt for another four in the third over. Earlier, Lanning hit two fours in the first two balls. However, on Wong’s full toss, Healy Mathews was caught at Jemica Point. At the end of the powerplay, Delhi’s score was 38 for three. The score was 68 runs for three wickets in ten overs. The collapse of Delhi’s innings started after the 11th over and nine wickets fell for 79 runs after which Radha and Shikha took charge.
