Navi Mumbai: Mumbai Indians registered a thumping win over Gujarat Titans in the inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s stormy fifty (65 runs in 30 balls) helped Mumbai lose the toss and score a huge score of 207 runs for five wickets. Later, restricting Gujarat Titans to just 64/9, they opened the account of victory by a huge margin of 143 runs. The match brought back memories of the opening match of the IPL which started in 2008, when Kolkata Knight Riders scored 222/3 against the hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore and won the match by 140 runs after getting Bangalore all out for 82 runs.

Harmanpreet tied the knot

Experienced batter Harmanpreet Kaur is not only the captain of India but also leading Mumbai. As soon as he came at number four, he hit a series of fours. Played an inning of 65 runs in just 30 balls, which included 14 fours. Apart from them, Hayley Mathews scored 47 off 31 balls and Emilia Kar played useful innings of 45 not out off 24 balls. Harmanpreet and Kar shared an 89-run partnership for the fourth wicket. For Gujarat, off-spinner Sneh Rana took two wickets for 43 runs.

Bowlers shine after batters

Gujarat got off to a poor start in reply to a mammoth target of 208 runs. In-form Australian opener and captain Beth Mooney retired hurt on the very second ball. After this, the batting took place on the lines of Aaya-Ram, Gaya-Ram. Harleen Deol, Ashley Gardner, Annabel Sutherland none could survive. Half the team was reduced to 22 runs. Except for Dayalan Hemlata, who came in at number six, none of the batters could reach double digits.

Gujarat lost everything except the toss

Gujarat Giants captain Beth Mooney won the toss and invited Mumbai Indians to bat first, which didn’t get off to a great start. He lost the wicket of opener Yastika Bhatia (1) early. If Mumbai were able to score 44 runs in the powerplay, then the credit goes to Mathews, who took an aggressive approach from the beginning and scored 47 runs in 31 balls. He shared a 54-run partnership for the second wicket with Natalie Sciver Brunt (23 off 18 balls). After both of them were dismissed, Harmanpreet and Emilia Kar shared a quick 89-run partnership. In the last, Pooja Vastrakar also made some good shots.
