Mumbai Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur was bought by Mumbai Indians (MI) for Rs 1.80 crore in the first auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on Monday. Harmanpreet had entered the auction with a base price of 50 lakhs. A three-way bid was held for him between Mumbai, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Delhi Capitals (DC). He was then signed by MI. Smriti Mandhana has been signed by RCB in the auction.
MI currently has two captains of the Indian cricket team, Harmanpreet and Rohit Sharma. Shortly after being taken over by MI, Harmanpreet said that she wants to emulate the success of the Mumbai Indians men’s team in the IPL through the WPL to be held from March 4 to 26 next month.
He said, I have always seen Mumbai Indians doing well in IPL and now I have a chance to be a part of Mumbai Indians team. I hope we make a good team. This is a big opportunity for all of us which we are going to experience.
“I am very excited and at the same time it will completely change women’s cricket not only in India but also in world cricket. This is a big initiative and we are looking forward to it. We all are coming to Mumbai and hope we all do better. MI fans have always been great and we would like to contribute in the same way as the MI men are doing.”
Smriti, on the other hand, was watching the auction process with her Indian teammates in South Africa because of the Women’s T20 World Cup, and was the first player to bid in the marquee Set 1.
“I think it’s been more than ten years now that we’ve been seeing auctions for men and it was just amazing because I’ve always stuck to the men’s auctions whenever they happened,” she said. It’s a big day for women’s cricket. I think this announcement of WPL first and then this auction is a history.
