New Delhi | Former England captain Charlotte Edwards has been appointed as the head coach of the Mumbai Indians-owned franchise in the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL). She is joined by veteran India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami in the dual role of team mentor and bowling coach, while Devika Palshikar has been signed as the batting coach and Trupti Chandgadkar Bhattacharya as the team manager.
She added, “I am delighted to welcome Charlotte Edwardes, Jhulan Goswami, and Devika Palshikar to the Mi OneFamily. It is wonderful to see more and more women in sports. It is an exciting time for women’s sports in India. “
In an official statement, Nita Ambani, director of Reliance Industries, owner of Mumbai Indians, said, “I am sure that under the brilliant leadership of Charlotte and with the support of mentor Jhulan and our batting coach Devika, our women’s team will continue to live up to the iconic legacy of Mumbai Indians.” I look forward to working closely with my coaches and the entire team as we embark on this very exciting journey.”
Charlotte is widely regarded as one of the greatest women’s cricket of all time. In a career spanning 20 years, she captained England to Women’s ODI and T20 World Cup victories in 2009. A brilliant right-handed batsman, Charlotte has played 23 Tests, 191 ODIs and 95 T20 matches for England.
Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee Jhulan is regarded as one of the greatest bowlers ever. He represented India in 12 Tests, 204 ODIs and 68 T20Is. Took 355 wickets across all formats, the most by any bowler in women’s international cricket.
In ODIs, she took 255 wickets which is a record in women’s international cricket. She remains the leading wicket-taker in the history of the Women’s Cricket World Cup with 43 wickets. As of now, she is associated with the Bengal women’s team as a mentor.
Devika represented India in 15 ODIs and one Test. Played as a right handed batsman and right arm leg break bowler. She was also the player and coach of the Assam women’s team from 2009 to 2012. After her playing career ended, Palshikar was the assistant coach of the India women’s team between 2014 and 2016 and was the assistant coach of Bangladesh when they won the 2018 Asia Cup.
In India, she has coached various Indian domestic teams, and was the head coach of Velocity for the 2022 Women’s T20 Challenge, which made it to the finals. On the other hand, Tripti is a former cricketer, former manager of the Indian women’s team and former selector at MCA.
WPL first season will have 22 matches, expected to be played in March this year. It is also being said in many reports that the players’ auction will be held on February 13.
