Mumbai | Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Alyssa Healy believes the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) has the potential to inspire young players to make a future in cricket in India. The inaugural season of the WPL began on 4 March, with Alyssa captaining the UP Warriors. Many current and former cricketers were advocating the introduction of WPL. It was being seen as a gamechanger for women cricketers in India.
Alyssa told cricket.com.au on Wednesday, “I am happy that I am playing in the WPL for a while. So it is really good how Indian cricket operates. I am in talks with Harmanpreet Kaur Smriti Mandhana the other day and what she had thought over the years about the potential impact of the WPL was re-emphasized.”
He said, “They have seen what the WBBL has done for our Australian team, when new faces come into our team, they get used to performing straight away on the international stage. Speaking with some of the Indian players, She says that it is the young players. The players feel that they are at the international level after coming to their team for a while.
Now that they are playing in the WPL, bowling to the likes of Beth Mooney and Nat Sciver-Brunt day in and day out, it is nice to think how much better this will make the Indian team. More importantly, the WPL will inspire the next generation of young girls in India to pursue a future in cricket.
Alyssa also feels that the WPL women’s T20 franchise cricket competitions have the potential to challenge Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).(IANS)
