Besides Chopra and Bindra, boxer Nikhat Zareen, tennis star Sania Mirza, hockey player Rani Rampal, former cricketers Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Madan Lal and Navjot Singh Sidhu supported the wrestlers. Here, on the instructions of the Supreme Court, the Delhi Police is preparing an FIR against Wrestling Federation President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

The sportspersons’ reaction comes at a time when Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha has called off her protest instead of filing a sexual harassment complaint against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with the ‘Athletics Commission’. Wrestlers were severely criticized for taking to the streets to resume the tournament. Neeraj Chopra said that it pains me to see our players on the streets demanding justice. Chopra said that as a nation, we are responsible to protect the integrity and dignity of every individual, be it a sportsperson or anyone else. What is happening should never happen. This is a sensitive issue, and should be dealt with in a fair and transparent manner. The concerned authorities should take prompt action to ensure justice. Abhinav Bindra, who won the gold medal in shooting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, recently expressed his support for the wrestlers.

Bindra had tweeted, ‘As a player, we work hard every day to represent our country at the international level. It is very sad to see that our players are finding it necessary to protest on the streets against the allegations of harassment in the Indian wrestling administration. Several wrestlers including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik are sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar with allegations against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and threatening wrestlers.

Two-time world championship gold medalist Zareen said, ‘It breaks my heart to see our Olympic and world medalists in this condition. People associated with sports also serve the country by bringing pride and honour. I have full hope that the law will take its course and justice will be done in this matter at the earliest. Although none of India’s active cricketers have given their opinion on this matter, some former players have shared their views.
