Opposition to Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh
There is a need to conduct elections in the SGM of WFI called on 4th July and the schedule of elections will have to be worked out accordingly. We look forward to your confirmation of acceptance and smooth conduct of the WFI elections on 4th July. Facing allegations of sexual harassment by India’s top wrestlers, WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh completed three terms (12 years) in March this year. The Sports Ministry declared the WFI’s earlier election date of 7 May as “null and void”. It appointed a two-member ad hoc committee to run the organization and conduct fresh elections within 45 days.
Sports Minister had said a big thing
Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, after meeting the agitating wrestlers on June 7, had said that the WFI elections would be held on June 30 but it was clear that meeting the deadline would be difficult as WI’s special general meeting (SGM) has been called for. 21 days notice is required. Elections will be held at the SGM or AGM (Annual General Meeting) of WFI. The wrestlers suspended their agitation till June 15 after Thakur assured the wrestlers that the government would not allow any family member or associate of outgoing WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh to contest the elections.
