Vinesh had written a letter to PM Modi
World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat had written a letter on Tuesday deciding to return her Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to the Prime Minister. She had written on social media, her life is not like those fancy advertisements of the government which talk about women empowerment and their upliftment.

Vinesh had said in her letter to PM Modi, I was given Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award, which have no meaning in my life now. Every woman wants to live with respect. Therefore, Prime Minister Sir, I want to return my Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award to you so that these awards do not become a burden on us in the path of living with dignity.
Vinesh received Khel Ratna in 2020
Vinesh Phogat was awarded India’s highest sporting honor Khel Ratna in 2020. Earlier he had received the Arjuna Award in 2016. Before Vinesh, Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia and Deaflympics champion Virender Singh Yadav had returned their Padma Shri awards.
Wrestlers are returning awards in protest against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh
The wrestlers had earlier demanded that no one close to Brij Bhushan should be in the WFI administration. After the elections, Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement from sports. Wrestlers have started withdrawing awards due to Brij Bhushan issue.
Sanjay Singh, close to Brij Bhushan, became the President of the Indian Wrestling Federation.
Sanjay Singh was elected President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Sanjay’s group, close to Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, had won 13 out of 15 posts in these elections. However, the Sports Ministry had suspended the newly elected panel for not following the provisions of its constitution while taking the decision and had asked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to set up an ad-hoc panel to govern wrestling.
Vinesh, Poonia and Sakshi accused Brij Bhushan of sexually harassing female wrestlers.
Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik had accused Brij Bhushan of sexually harassing many female wrestlers. He had also protested at Jantar Mantar earlier this year. This case is now pending in Delhi court.
