Wrestling trials for World Championship on August 25 and 26 only: Bajwa

Despite the suspension of the Indian Wrestling Federation by the United World Wrestling (UWW), the selection trials for the Indian wrestling team for the upcoming World Championship will be held on August 25 and 26. The UWW suspended the Wrestling Federation of India for not holding elections within 45 days, which means that Indian wrestlers will not be able to compete under the tricolor at the World Championships to be held in Belgrade from September 16.

Bhupender Singh Bajwa, head of the ad-hoc committee constituted by the IOA, told PTI that the trials will be held in Patiala on Friday and Saturday as per the earlier schedule. “The trials will be held as per the schedule,” he said. He, however, did not specify whether fresh information would be issued after the latest developments.

Gyan Singh, another member of the ad-hoc committee, also confirmed that the trials would be held in Patiala on August 25 and 26 but expressed displeasure over the functioning of the committee members, saying the suspension could have been avoided. “In such cases, UWW allows players to play in the Olympic qualifying world championships as neutral players. The Indian team can be named anything like UWW one or two. But his medals will be in his name, not India’s.

He said, “It is sad that the members of the ad-hoc committee could not explain to the UWW that the judicial process in India is different from other processes. He should have been told that the delay was not on the part of the Indian Federation. This is the decision of the court and non-compliance can lead to a contempt case. In this way the time limit of 45 days could have been avoided.
